At least eight people have died following a hot air balloon accident in the southern Brazilian city of Praia Grande, according to the Governor of Santa Catarina, Jorginho Mello.

"We are all shocked by the accident," said Mello in a statement on X. "Our teams continue to provide all necessary support to the families and victims. We continue to monitor the situation."
Praia Grande, a major tourist destination often dubbed the "Capital of Canyons," is located in Santa Catarina and is home to striking natural formations, including parts of the Aparados da Serra and Serra Geral National Parks.
Investigations into the cause of the incident are ongoing.
